The White Tower, the symbol of Thessaloniki, is at the top of the list of things to see when you go. The tower, which was built during the Byzantine period, was strengthened during the Ottoman period. With Greece’s independence from the Ottoman Empire, a kind of baptism ceremony was organized and painted white. This is where the tower got its name. Over time, the tower regained its former color with the pouring of white paints.
It can be visited free of charge by tourists every day of the week except Monday. Inside, there are letters, documents and barcovisions showing the history of Thessaloniki on each floor. On the top floor of the tower, there is a terrace and a cafe with a view of the city. I realized the reason later, because they thought I was showing the photos I took from Cumhuriyet Square because of the similarity of Thessaloniki to İzmir.
