LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT: MUNICH IN 36 HOURS

My feelings about the cities I see during my travels appear in the first 5 minutes and continue in the same way afterward.. We can’t get along with some of them, and it is immediately clear that we will never break up with some of them.. Munich is one of them.. In the first minutes I stepped into the city center, the same sincerity I felt when I saw Berlin 5 years ago was right in front of me in Munich.. Only difference; This time, unlike Berlin, we were meeting with a very elite German city.. Exploring a new country and a city you’ve never seen before is one of the most unique feelings in the world.. That’s why this 36-hour reunion will have its place like the others.

Munich; It’s our last trip of 2016 and if we don’t mind the others, the one we had the most fun with.. Although we received many advices and worked hard before we came, our excitement was different as it was the first time we set out without a guide and without a list.. Due to our travel dates, the unlimited street flavor of Central Europe would be with us along with the New Year’s sparkle, and it was a separate pleasure for us to see a city with just this concept.. This is the first time, we didn’t travel as if we had given ourselves a mission; I guess that’s why we loved each other so much.

Munich; Known to most travelers and travel enthusiasts as the center of Oktoberfest. Of course, we couldn’t make the campaign periods of the airline companies coincide with October this year, so we decided to choose the dates of the Germany trip to the date range when the New Year’s Eve markets were established.. We had so much fun in this city, which is already quite alluring on its own, in this city that experiences the iron cold, that I wanted to prepare my article as soon as I got on the plane for those who will end up here these days.. While researching this place, I also visited the lists titled Best New Year’s Markets in Europe; frankly, not being able to see Munich among them made me very sad.. Yes, now I am preparing this article with the dust of my feet so that you do not experience the same disappointment as me and see how unique the city is in the concept of New Year’s Eve.. If you are reading this article for your Munich trip, congratulations; You have chosen one of the most beautiful cities in Germany to visit.. By the way, good news from me to you; Thanks to the Christmas markets, you won’t be spending more than 150 Euros in two days!

Before entering the period information I must mention that Munich is the richest city in Germany. This beautiful city, which has an extremely high level of education and economic level, is also the capital of the Bavaria region, which includes the Romantic Road route.. In Munich, which has a strong historical identity, you will experience the traces of the past in the company of Gothic architecture, and you will spend days that you will never forget with the flavors of Bavaria.

Neues Rathaus – New Town Hall

Comparing Berlin and Munich, which I have seen before, is not equivalent in terms of the characteristics of the two cities, but Munich is far from political and political weight. I can tell you created a profile. Munich; a true bourgeois beauty; but his character is far from being snob. I understand that every city in Germany is beautiful in its own way, and every corner arouses different feelings.. We have only 36 hours in Munich, as our main purpose of coming here is to experience the New Year’s Market due to history and to go to Füssen by train and see Neuschwanstein Castle.. So you can guess that in my first half hour at Marienplatz I started whining ‘I wish it was a longer trip’. In these 36 hours, I have to embrace the city very quickly and give it a big place in my heart.. Let’s take a 1.5-day Christmas-themed fast tour in Munich together.

First Day, 14:00

As we set foot in the airport, we queue for passport control. Well, as with every trip to Germany, we wait in line for a while.. Then, without wasting any time, we turn in the direction of the train to the city center for the hotel.. After arriving at the centre, we will transfer from S-Bahn to U-Bahn.

16:00

Arrival at our hotel Motel One in Munich, our hotel is amazing. Motel One is a budget hotel chain spread across Germany.. Rooms are tiny, but very useful.. All the hotels in the chain are generally in central locations, and the ones that seem a little far away are very close to public transportation.. We had our first Motel One experience in Munich; but from now on, when it comes to Germany (or other cities where it is located), this will be one of the first chains I will look at.. Since the accommodation in the city is slightly higher than the places we have seen before, and we want to spend this trip with a minimum budget, I say that we have chosen this hotel.. Conceptually, even in the most central location, rooms are under 100 Euros.. During our 3-night stay in Munich, we paid 870 TL in total for the City Süd branch, where we reached the center in 10 minutes by metro, and I can confidently say that this figure is very affordable by city standards.. The first thing you should do after buying your flight ticket is to organize your hotel, places fill up with jet speed.

Marienplatz

16:30

Now that we have left our belongings at our hotel, we can start our trip for real.. In this 36 hours we will spend in Munich, our priorities will be the main squares where we can experience the spirit of the New Year’s Market to the fullest.. We will have a very enjoyable mini-holiday by including the must-see places in this area in our plan.. First destination; Marienplatz!

As you can imagine, it becomes the center of the city. As of the end of November, New Year’s Markets are held in the square where the Marien monument, which was built to celebrate the end of the Swedish occupation that continued during the 30 Years’ War, and Altes Rathaus and Neues Rathaus municipality buildings, which fascinate the viewers with their Gothic architecture, are located.. If you want to get to know the city very quickly and experience the Christmas spirit periodically in Central Europe, this is definitely the first route you will come to in Munich.. Since Marienplatz is the main square of the city, you can easily reach the most popular places such as Karlsplatz and Frauenkirche from here.. There are so many shops, cafes and restaurants in this area that you can spend two full days here, I’m sure you won’t be able to get enough.. The most beautiful part of the region is that even if you enter and exit the same streets many times, you never get bored.. In Munich, one of the calmest and most peaceful cities I have ever seen, it is very difficult to get rid of the effect of Marienplatz, even if the crowd will not fall to the ground.. On the other hand, I must admit that I saw so many civilized locals and tourists here for the first time in my life.

Frauenkirche Church

The Marien Monument in the square has a history of 378 years. The Virgin Mary statue, which was added to the top of the monument later on, was brought from the Frauenkirche, one of the important churches of the city, and combined with this monument, and it emerged structurally inspired by other examples in Europe.. Of course, our main subject here is Neues Rathaus, the new town hall, which I have mentioned for the example in Vienna, which makes you feel like reading Public Administration when you see it.

Neues Rathaus – New Town Hall

Gothic works always attract attention for me; In fact, the ones I prioritize for travel are usually the only European cities with intense Gothic details.. Apart from its harmony and texture with architecture, I find it very impressive from a historical point of view.. Germany’s glory is already on the line, but this Neues Rathaus is by far the most beautiful, most impressive of Gothic architecture I’ve ever seen.. It has such details that if you stand in front of it for 3 hours and examine it, you will still look at the corners.. I do not want to pass without adding an extremely touristic event about Neues Rathaus.. The clock tower part of the architecture is called the Glockenspiel, and the figures on its balcony start the performance every day at 11, 12 and 5 in the afternoon, accompanied by bells.. The performance, which lasts about 15 minutes, tells two stories about the history of Munich.. What if you can watch from the crowd? but for a pleasant sightseeing break, I recommend you to include it in your route. Since it gets dark very early in the winter time application, your arrival will not be in a very bright time range after the flight.. So, it’s time to step into the glittering Christmas market world by taking the elevator up to the Neues Rathaus tower and leaving the city view to the next morning’s schedule!

From the Marienplatz Christmas Market

18:30

We aim to see two more markets in this region by 9 o’clock before we realize how our two hours passed here; so now it’s time to cross from Marienplatz to the very near Karlsplatz. On the way here, you will see many shops on the pedestrian main street, all of them very attractive.. If you feel cold during the Marienplatz tour, it is possible to warm up by taking a quick tour at Urban Outfitters.. If you’re not too cold, leave it for the next day.. Well, as they say, time is money.

Karlsplatz Square

There are 4 fortifications in Munich; one of them is Karlstor Gate and Karlsplatz is actually the square in front of this gate and inside the city wall.. I don’t mind how it looks in the standard period, but in December the two-story market area of wooden houses and the open-air natural ice rink right in front of it are fascinating enough.. The two-story concept creates the feeling of being at a big street party.. You can consume the food and drinks you buy from the huts around the ground floor in the open air area on the second floor of the market.. The best thing is to watch the ice rink, if you run out of wine, you can get it from the huts on the second floor.. Another option; After enjoying some environment, go down and ice skating!

From Sendlinger Tor Christmas Market

19:30

I think we will break the record for seeing different markets during the day today. After seeing Karlsplatz, our current route is the market in the area where the Sendlinger Gate is located.. To get here, we first go back to Marienplatz, walk down Rosenstrasse and pass to Sendlinger Tor.. In the middle of the road you will see the mini market square called Rindermarkt.. This is one of the first New Year’s markets in Munich, and it greets you with a huge Christmas pyramid while still maintaining the old Christmas traditions.. I may have eaten some kind of potato for every meal of the day in Munich, but the most delicious was definitely the one I tasted at the cottage near the pyramid in Rindermarkt.

Christmas Pyramid, Rindermarkt

We’ve arrived on the fourth and last Sunday of the day, and we’ve got about 45 minutes here.. At 9 o’clock all the huts close fast as if on contract. That’s why we want to explore this place before it closes.. Markets all look alike. What you can see in common with all of them; Mini businesses selling hot dogs, mulled wine and beer. Since gifts are indispensable for the Christmas spirit, you can find many alternatives here at very affordable prices.. Magnets, snow globes, Christmas tree ornaments, Bavarian classic glasses, Santa Claus icons, hand-knitted scarves and beret sets are the ones that you will come across the most.. Prices are generally the same, but it is worth noting that Marienplatz is under 1-2 euros.. As the main square is very crowded, we adopted Rindermarkt and Sendlinger Tor more quickly. Of course, when you look at the whole city, I’m sure even these places seem touristy to most of you.

Potato as a German Classic, Of course from the New Year’s Market

21:00

Since we closed the markets and cooled the air quite a bit, we can go indoors now. However, as in every European city, life ends after 9, so the most logical choice is to run to one of Munich’s famous pubs.. One of the first things that comes to mind when Germany is mentioned is beer, and it is the same for Munich.. In the warmer months, when the sun is bright, hitting the open-air brewhouses at English Garten is one of the best things to do in the city.. At these times, you can spend the bright part of the day in the markets and surrounding areas and perform such an activity after the closing time.. Among the alternatives on our list; There are Augustiner am Dom and Zum Spöckmeier located in the Altstadt. As we could no longer walk because of the cold, we entered Zum Spöckmeier as we passed by.. I can say that we had a pleasant evening thanks to its warm atmosphere and delicious food.. Visitors generally prefer sausage alternatives, but if you don’t like this kind of delicatessen products or don’t prefer products containing pork, you can ask about the vegetarian varieties and the options they serve to the Turks.. Whatever you eat, it’s a must to drink regional beer Among the other suggestions I got before I came; Augustiner Braustuben and Augustiner Keller. The most tourist attraction of the city is the Hofbrauhaus in the center.

Zum Spöckmeier

Day two, 09:00

To make good use of the last 24 hours in Munich, it is essential to leave your home or hotel early. Since we will be spending the whole day outside, our address is Cotidiano at Gartnerplatz for a good breakfast beforehand.. The bakery with slightly American flavors is considered among the best in Munich for breakfast.. Early come wins as the place is always crowded especially in the morning hours. So, if you come before 10, you can find a very comfortable table.

The servings at Cotidiano are huge and filling, so like we did It would be a good choice for your wallet not to order one hundred and fifty varieties Even though it has been 10 days since I returned, I still have the taste of that scrambled egg and croissant.

Breakfast at Cotidiano

10:30

After a hearty breakfast, the destination is Viktualienmarkt, the city’s open market.. It is probably a very enjoyable area in the summer, we stumbled upon the version of the New Year’s Eve marketed periodically. Actually, this one is pretty colorful too.. Even though the trees have shed their leaves, the kokinas and Christmas decorations that fill the pots make the environment festive enough.. The best thing about Viktualienmarkt is that you can taste many things at a very affordable price, since it is already a market.

Viktualienmarkt

Viktualienmarkt

One of the best things to do in cold weather is to have some cheese with mulled wine. In addition, there are many crepes, waffles, and a wide variety of delicatessens in the area.. You can also taste delicious seafood at Nordsee, located right in the middle, and leave the table for an average of 60 Euros for two people.. As you know, we always do a market tour in the places we go, so we can quickly discover the eating habits and fresh products of the locals.. My suggestion is that you add this place to your list, regardless of the weather.

Viktualienmarkt

12:00

Stunning German architectures await you on the walkway from Viktualienmarkt to Altstadt. From the street where you will get tired of looking right and left, St.. When you go up to St. Peter’s Church, you have come to the central area.. You are expected to arrive at Neues Rathaus at noon by wandering around the souvenir shops in the side streets; We will enjoy the view by watching the city from the top. I love this activity of observing from the top, whenever I go up to such high places, I feel like the whole city is mine.. An absolutely essential activity for Munich, taking the elevator to the top of Neues Rathaus is 2.5 Euros per person.. I’m sure you’ll get some very good shots by spinning around the tower; Especially the view from the top of the Christmas market that covers Marienplatz square is magnificent.

On the Way from Viktualienmarkt to Rathaus

13:00

After descending from the tower, you can take a breather at the mini-market in the municipality’s courtyard, and have a walk in the cottages. you can snack. From here on, for the second scenic view, St.. We’ll walk to Peter’s Church. 300 steps await you for the tower of the church, which you will arrive in about 5 minutes.. Unfortunately, there is no elevator here, I would say don’t get hung up on the number of steps, as you will pay 3 Euros per person and get a little tired and have a better view.. Munich really deserves it.

Marienplatz from Neues Rathaus’s Tower

14:30

Yes, now that we’ve had our fill of the city, it’s time to take a walk. I had made a footnote to the plan of the previous day that the area you are in hosts important shopping streets.. On the streets of Kaufingerstrasse, Sendlingerstrasse and Maximillianstrasse, you will encounter many brands that look very sweet to you.. We wandered around a few stores that we were curious about in this hour range, and we warmed up in some of them.. Depot and Buttlers became our favourites.. When our phones ran out of charge, we ended up at Starbucks on Sendlingerstrasse.. However, after a while, we realized that it was just before dark and we found ourselves at the Christmas market again.

16:30

Now that it’s getting dark, we can continue our indoor exploration again. We wouldn’t be comfortable if we didn’t go to Man versus Machine, which we heard as the best coffee shop in Munich.. Our coffee shop is in Müllerstrasse, which is very close to the center, I recommend it to be on your list for its delicious presentations.. I tried the Flat White and I enjoyed relaxing very much, I’m sure their brewed coffee is also good.. By the way, if you like to carry beans from the good coffee bars of the places you visit, this is the place for you.. Man versus Machine roasts its own beans. It’s still on sale. While you’re at it, you can taste delicious snacks that go well with your coffee.. There isn’t a lot of room to sit in the venue, but I’m sure you’ll fit in a corner.

18:00

As the hours pass, supermarkets can buy the right to come to Germany. we wanted to give. Since the Germans do not pay extra taxes on cosmetics and beauty products like we do, you can find many products here at more affordable prices.. I’m not going into the subject of chocolates, but if you’re coming here, the biggest recommendation I can give you is; You do not come with cabin baggage. The more you buy, the more you get. As if I wasn’t the one fighting not to shop all day, I have to admit that I was thinking about how to get the suitcase accepted as I stuffed the boxes of chocolates into the supermarket basket.. Yet when I look at what I’ve brought home, I’m glad. Don’t do it like me.

Famous Christmas Cookies from the Marienplatz Christmas Market

The most suitable supermarkets we came across were Dm and Müller, do your shopping from these two markets. If you have a connection to Turkish teas sold in Germany, as in our family – and you should – your destination is the region where Turkish markets are located.. If you go, get a pack of Mevlana tea. You remember me as you drink.

20:00

If we’ve done our shopping, In your last hours, you can visit the places you remember in those colorful markets or other restaurants or pubs and add color to your evening.. If you have more time in Munich, many museums with different concepts are waiting for you.. At the same time, I would like to state that you will be in a city rich in thematic spaces.. Since we came here with a focus on the Christmas market and then came for the fairy-tale Neuschwanstein Castle that adorned our dreams, we were able to fit this much in 36 hours.

Transportation in Munich

First, You are in a city where you can travel very comfortably by public transport.. Moreover, since the ticket prices are very economical, your budget will not be shaken too much.. Fees aside, the Germans really did weave the country in iron nets.. There is a metro and train network that is not inferior to Paris.. It becomes extremely practical to visit the rest of the places, as they equip them with trams and buses.. The fact that the tickets are valid in all public transport means that you can use any vehicle easily.. If you’re one of those who like to travel on foot, like us, you won’t need it much, but you still need to use public transportation when getting down from the airport to the center or going from the center to the outer areas.

Speaking of the airport, let me clarify this. To get to the center from here, you need to use the S-Bahn, which is Munich’s train line.. When you arrive at the S-Bahn area, you will choose the S1 line for Hauptbahnhof and the S8 line for Ostbahnhof.. You can transfer to your destination for your hotel from these two stops.. You can make your transfers either with the train line S-Bahn or with the subway line U-Bahn; Both methods are extremely comfortable.. All lines passing through Hauptbahnhof and Ostbahnhof also pass around Altstadt, the historic city center where you will be frequent. Impossible; local bagel Brezel

Our ticket topic is very practical. If you are traveling alone, you can choose the Singe ticket category from vending machines or certain kiosks.. There are several alternatives according to the number of hours and days, 3-day tickets are the most logical if you are going to spend a lot of time.. When buying them, you should pay attention to the area where you will use them.. The historical area and its surroundings are called Inner Zone, it will be useful for touristic trips.. If you are going to places outside the Inner Zone, you need to look at the Outer Zone, München XXL categories, and for your airport transfers, you need to look at the daily Entire Network type tickets.. Single ticket category, as in every European city, but the main show of Bavaria, the capital of Munich, appeals to group travelers.. The regional distinction is the same here; but things are changing on pricing. For example; You have 3 days in Munich and you are traveling with 2 people.. When buying a ticket, you proceed from the Gruppen Day Ticket category and start the transaction with 2 people.. The amount you will pay is 12.60 Euros. This ticket; 6. valid up to. So, even if you’re traveling with 5 people, you get a single group ticket.. As a result, you pay the same amount.. Although it may seem a bit complicated when explaining from here, you will encounter great comfort when you go to the vending machine; because Turkish language option is also available.

City Scenes

Our usage for your opinion:

First Day and Fourth Day: Gruppen Day Ticket Entire Network for airport transfers / 23.90 Euros

Day Two: Gruppen Day Ticket Inner Zone/ 12,60 Euro

Before you go, you can see your ticket budget and choose which region on the public transport plan. I’m attaching the Inner Zone map here to see if you’ve stayed here.
