The Lake that Stones the Touched! Just kidding, there is no such thing of course. Though it didn’t come out that way. We are sure there are believers.
The depth of Lake Natron, which is a soda lake in northern Tanzania, is about 3 meters. The pH (acid/base) value of the lake is 10.5. The reason why the pH value is so high is that the lake is low compared to its surroundings. All the minarets in the surrounding are collected in the lake due to the low level of the lake. Therefore, the ratio of sodium and carbonate is also quite high. Thanks to the minarets in the lake, the dead animals dry up and become calcified and become sculptures.
Another feature of the lake is that it is a thermal lake with a temperature of 41 degrees.
Nick Brandt, who photographed dead and naturally mummified animals in the Lake, said in his book:
” Lake Natron. Nobody knows the causes of death, but the water has a high soda and salt content. So much so that even the paint from my Kodak film cans could be removed in seconds. I took these animals that I found on the shore of the beach and put them in their normal position before they died, as if they were living as they were, so I kind of brought them back to life. It’s like being reanimated in death…”
