Elephant Island: Koh Chang

Koh Chang, the second largest island of Thailand, inhabited by close to 5000 people. While only a few years ago, tourism services were provided for backpackers, now some of the coasts are filled with luxury hotels.

These hotels offer accommodation in different concepts to serve different budgets.. It is possible to stay in cottages or bungalow-style places close to the beach, as well as in luxury villas, suites or apartments.. The island’s White Sand Beach and Kai Bae Beach are more beautiful and sophisticated in terms of options, but also more expensive.

Koh Chang is actually the name of an archipelago of nearly fifty islands and The largest of these islands is Koh Chang Island which is the island I am currently on.. It is called Elephant Island (Chang) because the image of one of the headlands of the island resembles an elephant.. The elephants found on the island were brought to the island later, they are not part of the natural life of the island.. With an area of 429 square kilometers, 70% of the island is covered with pristine rainforest.. Diving and snorkeling are recommended.

After I had my friends visiting from my hometown take a tour of Thailand, it was time to leave Bangkok.. One of the countries I stayed the most during my trip was Thailand, and the city I stayed in was Bangkok.. I am in Thailand for the third time now and I have spent 3.5 months in total so far.. My new route was clear, Cambodia.

I was going to go from Bangkok to Cambodia by land.. Another place I wanted to see was Koh Chang (Elephant Island), an island close to the Thailand-Cambodia border.. On Khao San Road, I stopped by the agency where I bought a bus ticket on my way to Laos and bought a ticket to Koh Chang Island for the next day (280Baht, 19TL). they forgot. Since there was no other bus after that time and there were other remote terminals, I changed my ticket to the next day.

The next morning, after a 6-hour bus ride, I was at the Koh Chang ferry port.. There is a ferry every half hour between 06.30 and 19.00 in the morning.. The ferry crossed the 5.5 km road between the pier and the island in 30 minutes.

Taking the public transportation vehicles called Song Thaews waiting at the ferry pier (100Baht) and passing in half an hour to Lonely Beach, where many backpackers like me prefer to stay; I settled in Sun Flower Guest House (250Baht), which has a simple but beautiful room with a hammock in front, wireless internet and a bathroom (250Baht).

The settlement on the island is mostly located on the west side of the island.. As the eastern side is mostly mountainous and forested, it does not have a beach, but has impressive natural beauties with its magnificent cliffs and waterfalls.. The highest point of the island is Khao Salak Phet mountain with an altitude of 744 meters.. Even if I want to go here, I have to change my route to Cambodia.

A center of attraction with its long white sandy beaches and rich natural life.. Bird varieties, monkeys, deer, elephants and snakes constitute the main diversity of life.

With the discovery of the beauties of the island, rapid construction, although trying to overshadow the beauties of the island, offers the beauties of Koh Chang under your feet.

One of the best ways to explore the island is to rent a motorcycle.. The winding roads that run close to the coastline have wonderful sea and nature views.. It’s hard to leave some of the viewing points that trample the sea underfoot.. 2 Turkish friends who live on the island and hope to meet were in the hospital because of a motorcycle accident they had.

It is pleasant to spend the evening watching the sunset from the beach.. I noticed mostly couples hanging around; Koh Chang seems like a good option for a honeymoon break.

I met an Englishman on the way to a beachside bar in the evening.. When we started the conversation, he was madly surprised to hear that I was from Turkey.. The attitude of the Englishman, who was a little drunk, was funny.. He asked everyone who caught up with us or came from on the road to stop and guess which country I was from.. Of course, none of them could have guessed.

The British friend, who has almost not visited a country for the last 10 years, was saying that he had met someone from Turkey for the first time.. After he bought me a drink, he started chatting with the others, while I immersed myself in the arms of the night.
