Cordoba Travel Guide

Cordoba, located in the south of

Spain in Andalusia, is home to perhaps one of the most important monuments of the Islamic world.. The Cordoba Mosque, or Kurtuba Mosque, was perhaps the most magnificent mosque built in Europe during the Andalusian Umayyad period.. Today, the works left by the Umayyad State of Andalusia have a great share in the visit of tourists from all over the world to Cordoba.

I also took a brief look at this unique city during my 4-day Andalusia tour. I had the opportunity to see. After a journey of approximately 129 km from Seville, we reached Cordoba, which was once the capital of the Andalusian Umayyad State.. Along with Cordoba, Cairo and Baghdad, it was one of the three most important cities of the period.. Especially 10 and 11. In the centuries, the city lived its golden age.. For example, it was the first settlement in Europe where city lighting was used.

Cordoba Mosque

The Cordoba Mosque, completed in 987, stands out as the most important architectural work in the city.. As a result of the rapprochement of the caliph of the period with Byzantium, mosaics sent from Istanbul are found in the mosque.. This great mosque, where 22 thousand people could pray, was the largest mosque in the world after Mecca in its time.

This mosque is said to be one of the buildings that inspired the movement of naturalism.. The columns inside the mosque make you feel like you are in a forest.. The columns inside the mosque are also called “Forest of Columns“.

Although the Catholic Spaniards demolished the Cordoba Alcazar when they captured the city, they do not demolish this mosque at the request of the church.. But they are turning it into a Cathedral. The woodwork used in the mosque is exhibited in its courtyard today.. When you enter the mosque, you find yourself in a forest of columns.. The double arch technique used in the construction of this place ensures the strength of the structure.. This mosque, which consisted of 1013 columns when it was built, now has 856 columns after the destruction of the Christians.

5. Carlos is building a cathedral in the middle of the mosque to give the message to Suleiman the Magnificent that “Islam is over in Europe”. Approximately 160 columns were cut in the construction of this cathedral.. The kauba tree brought from the colonies in South America is used in the construction.

The other must-see structures of the city are:
