Basel is located in the northwest of Switzerland on one side of Mulhouse in France and the other side in Germany It is a city adjacent to the city of Freiburg.. It has a population of 170,000 and this makes Basel the 3rd of Switzerland.. makes the big city. Switzerland consists of 26 cantons. Each of these cantons has its own laws, parliaments and courts.. Our Basel Walking Guide is a guide that will guide you through your day in Basel and includes information on how to get to Basel, transportation information and Basel Attractions.
Basel is now located almost in the middle of Europe and many It stands out as a stopover point due to its proximity to the city.. In particular, it is likely to be the last stop or the first stop of trips to Alsace, because Basel Airport Aeroport is located in the French province of Mulhouse.. In other words, to come to Basel, you fly to France and take a bus journey that will take about 30-40 minutes.. Buddha makes Basel a part of Alsace. Basel has also turned into an art city.. Especially the formation called Art Basel is the main reason for the visit of those who are interested in art and inevitably..
Our journey in Basel took approximately 5 hours.. After a 2-day stay in Paris in France, we spent 5 hours in Basel after a night’s stay in Strasburg, Obernai, Colmar and Mulhouse.. Since our time in Basel does not cover very long periods, we will be able to share limited information, but this information will be enough to be a Basel Travel Guide for you.
Where is Basel? How to get to Basel?
Basel, as we mentioned in the first paragraph of our article, is located in the northeast of Switzerland..
If you want to go directly to Basel, reach the airport Aeroport, also known as Basel Airport, which is the most convenient option.. Relatively, since many airline companies from our country have direct flights here, their prices are more affordable than other European cities..
How will you reach the city center from Basel Airport? The distance between Basel and the airport is approximately 8 km.. There are buses departing from the airport to Basel every 10 minutes.. It was 4.70 CHF in October 2017 when we visited with the 50 buses.. With these buses, you reach Basel Train Station, which is close to the city center.. From here it is possible to walk to the city center in 10 minutes..
If you have Colmar plans from Basel, you can also reach from this train station.. We provided transportation between Mulhouse and Basel for 7.70 Euro. Transportation is possible not only for Mulhouse, but also as far as Strasbourg..
I can say this for urban transportation. Basel is literally a tram city. You can see street trams in different colors from all four sides.. However, we discovered Basel on foot.. frankly, it was a pleasant tour since we did not encounter too many slopes.. Tram fares vary between 3-5 francs. As in every European city, daily tickets for transportation are sold here.. For details, you can check out the notes of the travel lover I have followed.
Places to Visit in Basel
We wanted to explore Basel city center while we were all the way to Alsace and the airport was so close.. For Basel, where we spend about half a day, we have created a walking route as in the map below.. Basel Places to Visit List is listed below.
1. Marktplatz
Marktplatz (I think it means market square), the very center of Basel, is located in front of the city center Rathaus (Town Hall).. It was very pleasant to visit the market that was set up in the square on the Saturday we visited.
Marktplatz is not a very big square, it is a rectangular area stretching between 2 streets.. Here, besides the street delicacies, you can take coffee and take a breather at the tiny tables.. It is also a kind of local market, there are many products sold on mobile stalls.
2. Rathaus (Town Hall)
The red colored building Rathaus, which is on Basel’s must-see lists, is still used as the town hall. Dating to 1514, the building draws attention with its colorful figures and tower.. Its courtyard is as colorful as it can be seen from the outside..
3. Basel Monastery. You can climb their towers for 5 CHF. 9. century-old history puts it in an important position. (It is not only on the walking route above, but as 10 sites can be marked.) It is very close to the Kuntzmuseum Location
4. Basel Kunstmuseum (Museum of Fine Arts)
One of Basel’s most remarkable and visited museums, the Kunstmuseum serves as a fine arts museum.. 17. century-long history and works of Van Gogh and Picasso make it an important structure of the city.. A not so cheap price was set to see such a collection.. 26 CHF web : https://kunstmuseumbasel.ch/
It is worth mentioning here for Basel. Basel has completely turned into an art city with art museums and galleries known not only for Kunst but also for many parts of the city.. Although Contemporary or Modern art is not in our area of interest, it stands out as a complete travel spot for its enthusiasts.
The building above, called the Carnival Fountain, was built by Jean Tinguely.. The fountain, which is a very funny structure and sprays water on all four sides with iron pieces, is one of the places that receives the most visitors.. Carnival Fountain Location
If you want to see more works by Tinquely, you can visit the museum on the other side of the city.. Tinquely Museum Location
5. Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel
There is a very interesting museum in Basel that we noticed by chance while passing by.. Awaiting its visitors in its building where various figures dance in motion, the Toy Museum offers a different kind of expectation and joy.. The entrance fee starts from 5 CHF.

6. Mittlere Brücke
It’s time for the building that offers impressive views of Basel. Mittlere Bridge is built over the REN river that divides the city in two.. In this way, Basel clinched its impressive image with Mittlere.. Especially in summer, you can see people sitting by the river or entering the river.. The Rhine comes from the Swiss Alps and forms the border with Liechtenstein in the east of Switzerland and Germany in the north. Only in Basel, the north of the river remains in Swiss territory.. It forms the German-French border along the Rhine Alsace, which runs north from here.. It extends to the cities of Cologne and Duisburg in the north and empties into the sea from Rotterdam in the Netherlands.. The Rhine is not only the ornament of Basel, but also of many cities in Europe..
7. Spalentor (Spalen Gate)
The Spalentor Gate is the 14th of the city.. It is the only remaining part of the city walls that were built in the 19th century.. The gate, which you can reach in 10 minutes by passing through colorful streets and shops from Marktplatz, is one of the most photographed historical gates of the city.. There is a botanical garden right next to the door.. you can make your walk green.
Our walking tour of the city ended with Spalentor and we wandered the streets of Basel back to our starting point. Apart from that, there are 2 more medieval gates in Basel that run along the Rhine.. One of St.. Johanns-Vorstadt 110, St.. Johanns-Tor the other St.. Alban-Vorstadt 101, St.. Alban Tor. (Google maps calculated the walking path between the 2 gates for 28 minutes and 2.3 km) We used the bus number 50 next to the train station for transportation to the airport and started on the way back to Aeroport..
Basel in Short
We would like to briefly touch on the following topics in our hiking guide, which we prepared to explore Basel in a short time.
✈️ Like every European city, Basel is an expensive city. But there is nothing to be afraid of, not Paris, Munich or Amsterdam.
✈️ Everyone thought Basel was the capital of Switzerland.. I thought it was Zurich if it was me. Turns out we were wrong guys. The capital is Bern. I guess Reha Erus or any other reporter never reported from Bern.
✈️ If you want to explore the city and spend more time in museums in this art city, we can recommend you to buy a Basel card.. Although there is a statement on the site that only those who make accommodation can buy and cannot be sold as of January 1, 2018, check it out, maybe there is something we can’t see.. https://www.basel.com/en/BaselCard .
✈️ Frank is the Currency that is valid in Basel along with the Swiss Currency. Swiss Franc is approximately equal to 1 US Dollar and 0.90 Euros. You can use the Euro easily.. But we recommend that you buy CHF from the exchange office located at the train station.. CHF Current Currency Information
✈️ Swiss Public Holidays and Holidays: New Year – 1 January, Epiphany – 6 January,
Republic Day – 1 March, Saint Joseph’s Day – 19 March, Labor Day – 1 May , Swiss National Day – August 1, All Saints’ Day – November 1, Christmas – December 25
✈️ Although we buy water from the convenience store (Lidl Schweiz Location), we learned that water is drunk from the taps. But on the way back from Basel, affordable chocolate etc.. If you want to look at things, you can take a look at this market or another branch of it.. Other markets you will come across are Migros, Aldi and Coop.
✈️ There are many beautiful historical buildings in Basel.. One of them is the post office building.. You can still read the Post, Telegram, Telephone texts on the building.. Example of our PTT. Basel Post Office Location
✈️ Johann Wanner was the best gift and Christmas shop we’ve seen here. It has a very interesting window.. If you want to check out Johann Wanner location
✈️ Looking for hotels in Basel?. When choosing the hotel where you will stay in Basel, if you base the Marktplatz and its surroundings, you will not have transportation difficulties.. If you want to use Agoda, the search engine we use, for prices and reservations, Search Agoda Hotel. If you make a plan like us and stay in Mulhouse, you can stay in Mulhouse at relatively affordable prices and see another city: Places to Visit in Mulhouse
✈️ Restaurant chain Za Zaa, which you can see in many parts of the city. We have seen this name of Lebanese cuisine a lot in the city.. Alternatively, keep in mind.
✈️ When Switzerland is mentioned, Alps, Heidi, clock and chocolate come to mind.. If you are planning to buy a watch, you can see watches of many different brands while you are wandering around the bazaars.. In fact, I heard an announcement in a radio show that you should not enter Switzerland with a fake watch, you will be punished.. It is not known how true it is, but it is useful to be cautious.. Where are these brands? Here you go Basel World (every year, events and promotions on jewelery and watches are held in this region)
✈️ Although Basel is a small city, there are many museums in it.. Apart from Tinguely, the funny man we mentioned above, you can fill your tour with museums such as the paper museum, the history museum, the Art Museum Basel and the toy museum.. If you say that these are not enough for me, here is one of the greatest examples of modern art on the other side of the river Art Basel
✈️ You came to Basel with your backpack and you will return to the airport after 5 hours.. Don’t forget to use the safety deposit boxes at Basel Train Station.. There are fees between 5-10 Francs depending on the size of the day.
✈️ Besides all these, it is possible to take a boat tour on the Rhine.. Prices are between 10-20 Euros depending on the period.
✈️ To visit Switzerland and Basel, you must get a Schengen visa from a Schengen country or Switzerland.. (except for exceptional passports)
✈️ Finally, no one asks, but (there are not many who ask me questions anyway ) you might ask why you waited 2 years to write this article, I guess I never thought to write Basel. I started when I tinkered with photos on a Sunday morning.. Finally, we share a video with drone footage below..
