Internet country area code, or as it is commonly known, internet domain extension is the extension consisting of two letters at the end of the internet domain name and indicating the country where the address is registered.
Internet domain extension is managed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). Each country determines the registration procedures for country domain names according to its own rules. . In order to obtain the .tr extension given by METU, a document stating that they have name or trademark rights is required from legal entities and real persons. Some countries take action for the country’s official internet domain extension without asking for documents.
Today, 243 different top-level internet domain extensions are used. Of the 243 internet domain extensions, 195 are allocated to independent countries, while 48 are defined to dependent regions. The .co (Columbia) extensions that are frequently encountered in internet domain names, .tv (Tuvalu) used in online TV broadcasts, .fm (Micronesia and .pr (Puerto Rico) used by public relations companies and agencies) preferred for fm radio broadcasts actually belong to countries. .
The most recognized internet country area codes worldwide include the United States of America domain extension .us, United Kingdom domain extension .uk, Germany domain extension .de, and Europe domain extension .eu.
